Now, drinking water is a personal thing and many people have their own view point and there are so many posts, papers etc which answer the question. Yet, this is a simple and easy way to figure out how much water to drink
Case Study
In 2019 talking to a gym junkie, she commented about the hours she went to the gym and what she drank and said she was always bloated and often went to the toilet. Now she was drinking a lot of water and this was the problem.
So my advice was this. Cut down the amount of water and instead of drinking very quickly, where I mean she was drinking a half a bottle of water and then living her day and would do this on and off during the day and evening.
Now they say drinking about 2 litres of water a day is about the right amount. depending on your activities you may need more or less. Her day
To drink a glass of water every 2 hours and when exercising to take an extra drink before and after the exercise and sips, not a lot during the workout.
First What Happens
Now if you decided to drink a lot of water, chances are you will go to the toilet shortly after, so your wasting valuable water. But, if you keep drinking a lot of water it will build up and cause some bloating. And, chances are you will get up in the middle of the night and go to the toilet.
It takes about a week for the body to adapt, and during this time things will change. Then it is a matter in your case to adjust what your drinking to your best body needs.
Back To The Study
So daily she would have her glass of water and, extra during exercise. Now going from about 4-litres a day to approx 2 with all her exercise.
- Bloating went down
- The need to go to the toilet was less
- Drinking on a regular basis during the day
- She was more hydrated as the water had time to enter the body as needed
- Slept through the night without going to the toilet
How Much Water Should You Be Drinking
It is a good habit to get into, just knowing the amount you need. An office worker may need less than a manual labourer, and a football player. Need a lot more due to sweat, exercise, game day etc.
My Marathon Training
I used to drink a lot of water and it wasn’t until I realised that much was wasted and unneeded. This is how I came up with the 1 glass of water every two hours. It is pointless drinking so much that you are going to the toilet all the time. But, not enough may cause problems to0. During my daily 2 hour run, I found the 1 glass every two hours, 1 before and 1 after was the best result. Also, unlike many runners, a bottle of water was always taken, as annoying as it was, it meant, less chance of becoming thirsty, one of the first signs of dehydration.
Remember This
No matter what you do giving a steady amount of fluid to your body over the day is far better than drinking a lot in a short period. This allows your body to stay hydrated and running the best it possibly is.
If you exercise a lot and stop sweating, yes this does happen, it means you are dehydrated as your body is using that fluid due to lack of fluid in the body.
Conclusion
We need to always be aware of how much water we drink. If you are unsure it is important to talk to your health care professional. There are so many posts and pages on Google, etc. It is important to understand what you need vs what you drink.
A important point, is that when you are thirsty you are dehydrating, when you are drinking to much you are adding pressure to your kidneys.
